How Layered Acrylic Pet Art Is Made

It Starts With Your Pet Photo

Every PetAureli portrait begins with the photo you send us.

We are not looking for a studio-perfect image. What matters most is that your pet’s face, eyes, coloring, and important features can be seen clearly enough for our artists to work from.

A good reference photo helps us understand details such as:

• the natural shape of the face and ears;
• eye color and expression;
• fur direction, markings, and color changes;
• the shape of the nose and mouth;
• small features that make your pet immediately recognizable.

These details become the visual foundation of the finished artwork.

We Prepare the Portrait Around the Pet

Once the reference photo is selected, the portrait needs to be prepared for the final composition.

This is where we decide how the pet should sit within the artwork — how much of the head or body should be visible, how the subject should be centered, and which details need the most visual attention.

For a head portrait, the eyes and facial proportions are especially important. For a full-body portrait or a piece featuring more than one pet, the composition must also balance the spacing between subjects.

We aim to keep the result natural rather than over-stylized. The portrait should still feel like your pet, not a generic dog or cat recreated in an unrelated art style.

The Artwork Is Separated Into Multiple Layers

This is one of the biggest differences between layered acrylic pet art and a traditional flat print.

Instead of placing the entire portrait on one surface, the visual information is planned across several transparent acrylic layers.

Different parts of the pet can be assigned to different depths. Depending on the portrait, those layers may help separate:

• the overall silhouette;
• background or supporting color areas;
• main fur masses;
• facial features;
• eyes, nose, and other focal details;
• fine finishing accents.

When viewed from the front, these transparent layers align to form one complete portrait.

When viewed from an angle, however, the physical separation between the acrylic sheets creates visible depth. That subtle depth is what gives layered acrylic art a different presence from a standard photo print or poster.

Each Layer Has Its Own Job

Good layered artwork is not created by repeating the same image six times.

Each acrylic layer needs a specific visual purpose. If too much information is duplicated, the portrait can become muddy or overly heavy. If too little is placed on a layer, the finished piece may feel flat.

Our artists therefore think about the portrait from front to back.

Fine facial details may sit closer to the viewer, while broader shapes and supporting tones can sit deeper within the piece. This creates a natural hierarchy: the eyes and expression remain the focus, while the supporting layers give the portrait body and dimension.

This is also why every pet requires slightly different decisions. A fluffy Samoyed, a short-haired French Bulldog, and a long-haired cat do not have the same fur structure, so their layer planning should not be identical.

The Acrylic Layers Are Produced and Aligned

After the layered artwork has been prepared, the individual transparent acrylic sheets are produced.

Alignment matters throughout this stage.

The eyes, nose, fur edges, markings, and outline need to remain in the correct position from one layer to the next. Even a small shift can change how the portrait reads when all of the layers are viewed together.

Once aligned correctly, the transparent sheets begin to create the dimensional effect that defines the finished PetAureli piece.

From straight ahead, the layers visually combine. From the side, the edges of the acrylic reveal the physical construction of the artwork.

We Check the Details by Hand

Before a portrait is considered finished, it needs to be checked as a complete object — not only as an image.

Our studio looks at details such as:

• whether the layers line up correctly;
• whether the face still feels balanced when viewed at full size;
• whether the eyes and expression remain the visual focus;
• whether colors feel consistent across the assembled artwork;
• whether the finished piece is clean and ready for presentation.

This finishing stage is an important part of the process because something that looks correct on a screen can feel different once it becomes a physical layered object.

The Finished Portrait Is Prepared for Its Journey

Once the artwork has passed its final checks, it is prepared for shipping.

Because each piece is made individually from a customer’s pet photo, production is not instant. PetAureli portraits typically require approximately 7–10 days to create before dispatch.

After dispatch, tracked delivery typically takes approximately 7–15 days for supported destinations.

The result is not a digital file or a mass-produced pet decoration. It is a physical portrait created around one specific animal and one specific photograph.

Why We Still Call It Handcrafted

Modern tools are part of many creative processes, but tools do not decide which details matter most in a pet’s face.

The handcrafted part of our process is in the judgment: choosing the composition, studying the reference, separating the visual elements, checking alignment, refining details, assembling the finished artwork, and making sure the final piece still feels like the animal in the original photograph.

There is no single automatic template that works for every pet.

Different coat types, expressions, colors, poses, and markings all require different decisions. That individual attention is why every PetAureli portrait begins with the pet rather than with a fixed design.
